Plenty of warm things to do for Cabin Fever Weekend

To The Press

The weather forecast this weekend may be a little frightful, but there are plenty of ways to enjoy some Cabin Fever Weekend fun in Charles City and still stay safe and warm.

Forecasters have predicted dangerously cold temperatures for Friday and Saturday, encouraging limited outdoor exposure. As a result, Cabin Fever Weekend organizers have pared down the outside offerings this year for safety reasons, said Mark Wicks, community development director.

That being said, this year’s schedule still offers a little something for everybody, and most of it indoors, Wicks added.

Friday night includes Whiteout Roller Skating at the Charles City Family YMCA. Participants are encouraged to wear white for the winter theme. The Charles City High School girls and boys varsity basketball teams are also in action that evening, hosting Oelwein.

On Saturday morning the Charles City Public Library Saturday will have an escape room made just for kids. The Comet grapplers will host the Northeast Iowa Conference Wrestling Meet, or warm up in the pool at Charles City’s YMCA during open swim. Finish your night between bingo at the Senior Center and the Rotary Soup Supper at the Elks Lodge.

Sunday is supposed to be warmer, and Wicks said outdoor activities will be back on the schedule along with indoor events.

The Rockford Fossil and Prairie Center’s Bird Feeder Palooza will begin at 1 p.m. The Cedar Springs Camp in Floyd will have outdoor events until 4 p.m., including refreshments by the fire to warm up in-between hiking, nature walks, ice skating, snow tubing and sledding.

The Charles Theatre will have a Sunday matinee, “Spider-Man – Into the Spider-Verse,”  and Messiah Lutheran Church is hosting a Game Day of 500 and dominoes. You can finish out the day with Penny a Pin bowling at the Comet Bowl.
