Joan was a member of the Congregational Church in Charles City where she played handbells and sang in the choir. She was involved with the VFW, American Legion, Republican Party, and volunteered for Meals on Wheels.

A loving mother and grandmother, she enjoyed spending time with her family, cooking and had a library of cookbooks. She also had a great love for animals, passing that love of pets on to her children.

A private memorial will be held at a later date.  To honor her memory, donations may be made in her name to the American Heart Association, or the Humane Society.
