Gloria J. Hugo

Gloria J. Hugo, 77, of Morris, IL (formerly of Mason City, IA) passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Monday, March 25, 2019 after a courageous battle with corticobasal degeneration.  An intimate family service will be held in Coal City, Illinois with the Reverend Bradley Shumaker officiating.  A Celebration of Life will be held in Mason City, Iowa in the summer of 2019.

Gloria was born on November 26, 1941 in Charles City, Iowa and graduated from Charles City High School in 1959.  After many years of being a stay-at-home mom, Gloria went into business with a friend to do interior painting and wallpapering.  They called themselves “The Put-Ons.”  She later moved to Mason City in 1982 where she continued her business and became the “Put-On.”  As she was building her business in Mason City, she met contractor, Gunther Hugo, who would often find work for her as he built homes or knew of other new construction jobs.  The two later married on July 7, 2007 and shared quality time together at the cabin Gunther built.  They also spent time with both of their families as well as traveled together and enjoyed Neil Diamond concerts.

Gloria was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church of Epiphany in Mason City and was a volunteer as a money counter on Monday mornings.  She also enjoyed making many breakfast casseroles for those that she worked with.  Gloria was a very kind, caring, and loving person who had a very big heart.  She was a devoted mother, sister, grandmother, and friend.  She always loved to entertain at her home and would bake or cook something as friends and family visited.  She loved visiting her children and grandchildren as often as she could and wanted to always know about the activities her grandchildren were involved in.

Gloria enjoyed gardening, cooking, baking, and knitting.  She was also an avid reader and loved crime shows and action movies.  She had a quick wit about her and loved to joke around and laugh with everyone.  She was also quite the maxxinista as she frequented TJMaxx and was always buying or returning a purse or some clothing item.  She loved decorating her home in the most unique décor and always welcomed everyone who entered.

Gloria is survived by her two children, Sara (Palmer) Smith of Coal City, IL and Steve (Audra) Palmer of Fort Mill, SC, step son, Bruce (Leslie) Hugo of Sandy, UT; two sisters, Joanne (Jim) Boyd of Loveland CO, and Terri (Jim) Allen of Cedar Falls, IA; five grandchildren: Danielle (Dylan) Schulte, Mackenzie Smith, Zach Smith, Vann Palmer, and Sam Palmer as well as many nieces and nephews.  Gloria was preceded in death by her parents, Leona and Lloyd Rowley, her husband, Gunther Hugo, and step daughter, Julie (Hugo) Sumpter.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to www.curepsp.org in Gloria’s memory.  Through these donations, the hope is to increase awareness and raise money in finding a cure to fight rare neurological diseases such as corticobasal degeneration or CBD.
