Unicorn drinks planned for Cedar Talks tonight (maybe)

By Kate Hayden, khayden@charlescitypress.com

It arrived on my Twitter feed early Wednesday, spotted by a wary state capitol reporter and close friend: the Unicorn Frappuccino, “Made with only the finest rainbows,” the Starbucks chalkboard asserted.

Worse yet than the swirling pink/ purple base with “unicorn dust” blue powder on top — the drink allegedly changes flavors as you stir, from “sweet and fruity” to “tangy and tart.”

“Early adapters have referred to the flavor as reminiscent of Sour Patch kids, which is kind of on the nose, seeing as unicorn blood in Harry Potter gave drinkers eternal youth,” Bustle writer Emma Lord reported.

As a Harry Potter fan, I’d like to point out that drinking unicorn blood also doomed you to a cursed existence for slaying something so pure.

That was a trap. Now that I have your attention, let me tell you about Cedar Talks tonight.

Our second event in the Cedar Talks series starts at 6 p.m. with Dr. Donna Hoffman of UNI speaking on the presidential executive order.

The topic tonight is by request of the community (you know who you are), and will explore past precedents and the current president’s use of this sometimes misunderstood power.

Feel free to arrive early and order a drink or dish from the Pub on the Cedar, our hosts.

For those of you able to attend our inaugural March event, thank you! We had a great crowd for Dr. Scott Peters, also an associate professor at UNI, who presented on the U.S. Supreme Court’s judicial independence.

We apparently left a great impression: by the time I called Dr. Hoffman looking for a speaker on this month’s topic, she had already heard about our group!

For those that missed us, the Charles City Public Access Network is hosting the talk online at charlescitypan. com/special-programing/.

I’m continuing to plan for our next two talks in May and June. Once settled, you can find the dates in the Charles City Press community calendar, or find our group on Facebook by searching Cedar Talks: Charles City. I’ll be posting all our announcements and events through that page.

Feel free to email me at khayden@charlescitypress.com with any suggestions or comments. Thanks for joining us — I’ll see you at the Pub tonight!
