Letter to the Editor: Supports law enforcement center vote

I will be voting “Yes” regarding a new Law Enforcement Center in Floyd County.

The current jail was determined to be inadequate more than five years ago by the Iowa Department of Corrections. Change will eventually be required. If the change would be to a hold and transport facility, costs would be more than $15 million.

A new facility is budgeted at $13.5 million and includes much-needed remodeling at the courthouse that will result in a decrease in general fund costs.

And immediate action reduces the liability of the county for an injured staff member or prisoner related to unmet standards. 

This decision is a “no-brainer.”
