Letter to the Editor: Save the railroad depot building

By Conrad “Dugan” Thompson, Charles City

MUSE: “What he was — became something else. Romulus, founder of Rome, vanished, raised by the wolf. As those women kissing, and pacifying their husbands when Lady Roma set them to burn the ships, the people found a wholesome new city. Sometime after that Jesus came, amen.

An ex-convict, homeless man approached me recently, and told me his woes. He made some interesting points; I would not reject his humanity, and listened awhile.

“You must make the very best from what little you have,” I told him. That was all I said.

What would it take to save the railroad depot building? It should be the “Choo-choo” Restaurant with toy train running in its rafters.

Who will save the man and the building? The building will arrive at its fate and the man will save himself.

A friend, forging ahead in these hard times, is the illustrious Dennis White, somewhat misunderstood, I believe. A man of style and taste, a talent, a track star celebrated, a man refusing to cut his hair for a scholarship as a matter of principle, he is an architect with a building proposal for the interstate side of Charles City — a one-of-a-kind landmark rest stop area.

What it is — becomes something else. What would it take to save the railroad depot building?

The 2018 Season Charles City Supper House & Dinner Theater featuring Bill Bull Steak House & Rapid Restaurant Builders of Somewhere, Iowa, for 6 parking spaces with a valet, thank you, and amen.” (End of speech.)
