Comet girls net first win of the season

Staff Report

HAMPTON — You can no longer say that the Charles City girls tennis team can’t win on the road.

Against Hampton-Dumont at Hampton-Dumont, the Comets won all nine varsity matches for their first win of the season.

“They’re all improving so it was nice to get a win to show for it,” Charles City coach Brian Parrott said.

Comet No. 1 singles player Julia Page defeated Gabby Tielke 10-2, Emilee Bilharz rolled over Caitlyn Freese 10-1 in No. 3 singles, Emma Heidebrink defeated Shayling Beyer 10-4 in No. 4 singles, and Sandra Bontemps defeated Jadin Beyer 10-2 in No. 6 singles.

Charles City freshman Jody Sindlinger was winning her No. 5 singles match against Bianca Tielke (4-1) before an injury forced Tielke to retire. Morgan Kellogg got a walk-over victory in No. 2 singles when Bella Siems withdrew.

Since Siems was due to team up with Gabby Tielke in the No. 1 doubles match against Page and Sarah Barry, Charles City was granted an walk-over victory.

To avoid a third walk-over loss in No. 3 singles because Bianca Tielke was unable to compete, Hampton-Dumont paired Gabby Tielke with Beyer to take on Bontemps and Charles City freshman Jody Sindlinger.

“So they put their No. 1 singles player in No. 3 doubles,” Parrott said of the makeshift team, “but we still won [11-9].

“They both played well, and that’s the best I’ve seen Sindlinger play.”

Kellogg and Bilharz defeated Freese and Beyer, 10-6, to win No. 2 doubles.

Charles City will host Clear Lake tonight at Sportsmen’s Park — the Comets’ lone home meet of the season.

“It’s nice to go into that home meet with a victory,” Parrott said.
