Comet ladies fall to Cadets, Green Devils

CHARLES CITY — It would have been nice for the Charles City Comets girls basketball team to build on any momentum that may have resulted from its first victory of the season over Decorah during a favorable Friday the 13th road game.
But as luck would have it, the next two opponents for the Comets can go through you like buzzsaws.
On Friday, the Comets faced the undefeated Crestwood Cadets in Crestwood, and the winning streak — for the Comets — came to an end.
Ellie Friesen, a formidable nemesis for the Charles City girls cross country and track teams, has proven that she can run the floor as well as she scored a game-high 24 points in leading the Cadets to a 66-28 victory as Crestwood (13-0) swept the regular-season series.
The following afternoon, the Comets hosted Osage in the first game of a varsity doubleheader.
Pressing early and trying to establish a post attack, Charles City kept the game close before Rylie Olson’s 3-point play helped give the Green Devils some distance at halftime (25-12).
With Charles City freshman Olivia Zuspan finding her range beyond the 3-point arc, the Comets managed to pull within striking distance during stretches of the second half. But Osage gave Charles City fits with its full-court trap, initiating a series of timeline infractions and turnover baskets.
The end result was a 56-35 Green Devil victory. Olson had 11 points to lead Osage (10-3).
Zuspan, who hit five 3-pointers, had a game-high 17 points for Charles City (1-12).
