Foster sprints to three wins at Lady Bulldog Track Invite

HAMPTON — Several days removed after setting a school record in the 200-meter dash to open the outdoor season, Charles City senior Katie Foster earned three first-place finishes at the Lady Bulldog Invitational, Friday at Hampton-Dumont.

Foster, who placed second in the 200 at the state meet her sophomore year before sitting out last season while recovering from knee surgery, won the 200 at H-D with a time of 27.08 seconds. She also won the 100 with a time of 13.41 seconds.

Later, she anchored the Comets’ 4-by-100 relay team that — with fellow returning senior state qualifiers Sadie Ruzicka and Brianna Carey as well as sophomore Sami Heyer — was dominant winners with a first-place time of 52.81.

Overall, the Comets placed third with 99 team points behind runner-up Osage (103.5) and invite champs Humboldt (122).

Other local athletes who shined at the invitational include Rockford senior Alyssa Staudt. Due to sign her letter of intent to continue her track career at Western Illinois, Staudt won the high jump with a clear of 5 feet, even.

Staudt has jumped better this year as her season and personal-best clear of 5-foot-6 has her among the leaders in the state in all classes.

Charles City freshman Olyvia Zuspan may find herself among the state leaders in the high jump in the near future. Relatively new to the event, Zuspan cleared 4 feet, 10 inches, which was good enough for third place.

The shot put event wasn’t merely a game of inches — it was a game of quarter-inches. North Butler senior Nicole Heeren won the event with a toss of 38 feet, 3 ½ inches, besting Charles City senior Sara Martin, who had to settle for second place with a throw of 38 feet, 3 ¼ inches.

Martin also placed second in the discus with a throw of 110 feet, 1 inch. Brooke Mueller of Central Springs won the event with a throw of 118 feet, even.
