Charles City relays record season bests in four events at New Hampton Girls Invitational

Staff Report

NEW HAMPTON — There are so many things that can go wrong during a relay. Fortunately for the Charles City girls track team, things have been going right.

Especially during the New Hampton Girls Invitational on Monday

That’s where and when four Comet squads recorded season-bests in their respective events.

Less than a week after setting a meet record at the Osage Invitational, the Comet 4-by-100 shuttle hurdle relay team of — in order of baton exchange — Brianna Carey, Tayler Schmidt, Lynn Hoeft and Sadie Ruzicka bested that mark by more than a second and a half with a first-place time of 1 minute, 9.16 seconds.

Charles City’s 4-by-800 relay team of Gillian King, Whitney Martin, Bailey Mitchell and Mackenzy Bilharz obliterated the previous season-best by nearly 15 seconds with a first-place time of 10:23.09.

Charles City also set season-bests in the 4-by-100 and 4-by-400 relays.

Carey, Ruzicka, Katie Foster and Alex Litter recorded a second-place time of 52.15 seconds, which was bested by New Hampton’s foursome of Rachel Rinke, Darian Wegner, Bailey Knowlton and Sadie Tenge, who finished in 51.74 seconds.

Charles City’s 4-by-400 team of King, Sami Heyer, Selah Opp and Olyvia Zuspan combined efforts for a third-place time of 4:27.47, nearly a 12-second improvement from a previous season-best.

In the individual events, the Comets got some firsts from a pair of usual senior suspects — Foster in the 100-meter dash (12.73) and Sara Martin in the shot put (36 feet-even).

Martin also placed second in the discus with a throw of 115 feet, 4 inches. Mackenzie Goeller of Wapsie Valley won the event with a throw of 119 feet, 6 inches.

Charles City placed third with 110 team points behind hosts New Hampton (183) and Osage (123).

Rounding out the team scores were Independence (67); Nashua-Plainfield (57) which got a first out of junior Morgan Kapping, who won the 400 with a time of 1:04.19; and Wapsie Valley (36).
