The Charles City Community School District is allowing a sneak peak into the newly finished Charles City Middle School for a small fee: elbow grease. The District, with the help of School Board Member Robin Macomber, is organizing a cleaning effort to prepare the new Charles City Middle School for its students.

“We just need some willing bodies, committed to (cleaning) the windows, sweeping the floors, put a nice shine on it all for our kids,” Macomber said.

According to Macomber, they are looking for volunteers committed to the task.

“Come prepared to do some work, some cleaning,” she said. “We’re looking for, probably (ages) 16 and above just because it is still a construction site.”

She also asks that volunteers dress appropriately for the working conditions.

“(Wear) closed toed shoes and long pants,” Macomber said.

Asking the community to help apply the final polish is not a new idea.

“It’s just something that other community schools (have done),” Macomber said. “At this point…we want to get it done in a timely fashion.”

Asking for volunteers to help with the final steps allows the district to give community members an opportunity to take part in the project. A few volunteer groups have already voiced their willingness to help.

“Committee groups will help with this,” Macomber said. “It’s a great way for the community to participate (and be involved in the new building).”

The clean up day is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. and go until 10 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 2. Cleaning supplies will be provided. Those interested in helping are asked to sign up on the CCCSD website www.charlescityschools.org. Once on the school’s homepage, click the broom reading “help us clean” to register. People are not expected to stay and clean the entire seven hour shift.

“If you work for one or two hours you can leave,” Macomber said.
